San Serif

What can I say?

Slab Serif

This is all Slab Serif fonts supported by my Photoshop CS4.
In terms of remembering this fonts, they are very good for such a small subset.

Old Style Fonts

From "The Non-Designer's Design Book".

I typed in all Oldstyle fonts listed in the book into my Photoshop CS4 and got only these. Some font types are missing from my software. But it might probably good for me, because I can begin from a subset of the list and then add more after I remember these font types.

Design Basics

A book by Joyce Rutter Kaye, which I don't really like so far. I'm a layman of design, that why I want a design basics book to introduce me something. However, I cannot see any basic things for me, so that I can learn, or practice.

Here is some excerpt from the book:

To promote the services of Stathouse, a pre-press service bureau, Mike Salisbury communications created a brochure that uses striking graphics based on tattoo designs to convey a message about the company's precision color and state-of-the-art digital capabilities.

That is the comment for some works, belongs to a chapter named "Layout". Can you see something about layout? And what can I learn from this comment? Nothing, at least so far.

Even more, at page 46, 48, 50, there are some web design samples which are obviously middle 90s design. What the hell? The book was published in 2002! Are you kidding me?

I cannot find the delicious button.

Is it because I'm using Google Chrome? Or the book is too old to be reliable?

Finally I found the Chrome extension here:

HIT-HER-TO

I like this word: HIT-HER-TO. Just like the work TO-GET-HER.

English vocabulary system is very much different from the Chinese system which I've already get used to. Chinese characters are a system built on the meaning. But sometimes I can still get some funny things from English words by letter separating like this.

Bookmarks and Tagging

It is the next chapter in the book "Your Life Online" after the blogging one. This time I realized that it is not my fault to forget the chapter number of it, for the Author of the book did not tag the chapter with the number. She... maybe he only enlarge the font so that I can tell it might probably be a new chapter.. so web style, ha.

I don't like delicious, although I like the idea of it. I used it two years ago and abandoned my bookmarks there because I could not easily manage my bookmarks. Maybe I need some time to learn how to use the web app, or maybe it provides me a pluggin or something similar so that I could manage my bookmarks much easier.

Now I use Chrome's bookmark synchronization tools very often, which is one of the most favorite features in Google Chrome I ever know.

I just began my reading on this chapter. Probably I will found something interesting in the book.

You Life Online

It's one of the books I borrowed from the Ashfield Library today.

I seldom read this kind of books in my previous life. But I recognized that I am a little bit away from the contemporary life in terms of the technology life and want to seek some way to keep myself update.

Actually this is a book written in 2007, about 3 years ago. It's not a contemporary book in terms of web technology or online technology, but I still found something worthy to read out there.

The very early chapter, in case I'm not very much sure whether it's the first chapter, of the book, is some thing about blogging. That reminded me about my blog and that's why I am here again.

Back to Library

I'm back to the library. I like books related places like libraries, bookshops, etc. Now I'm back and applied for my another library card in Ashfield Library. It's underconstructing now, so it is not a very please place to stay. I borrowed some books and back to my home and began to read them.

Cygwin and X61

What a beautiful day today.

I received my battery from Hong Kong and have my x61 works again.
Actually it works always except the battery. Now I got my battery
and that's great for about au$50. Seems it last for 3 hours in
WIFI network with low system load.

I got Putty-cyg system run on my computer now today. It simply works.
That's great. I hate M$'s ugly command prompt, as well as its PowerShell system.
I don't know why M$ doesn't release a better one. It's not difficult for them
in terms of technology. They just neglect the requirements from the users.

The website for puttycgy is here:

Background Thread at Google App Engine

In Google App Engine, you could not easily start a thread and make it works at the background.

A simple Thread.start() API call will cause an Exception like this:

java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.lang.RuntimePermission modifyThreadGroup)

But you can use the experimental TaskQueue API to start a task in the queue.

Trying jappstart

Not bad.

Got My Android G1 Back to Live

My G1 has only 192MB memory, which is not suitable to run multiple Java program at the same time, I think. I left the phone there for several months, because I could not bear the speed when switching between applications.

Yesterday, I just took it out and tested it again with some new programs. It worked just fine for me. Especially after I installed a process killer tools. That's great!

People say, at least people from Google say, Android 2.2 is much faster than the previous versions. I would like to test. The only available version of Android 2.2 for G1 is from XDA forum, which is not complete yet. I have to wait or just buy a new phone. It's expensive in Australian gadget market. Just wait.
